HERE'S YOUR BEST FIRST SHIFT!

Your students aren’t stepping up — because they never had to lead.

You’re still setting the rhythm, even when they’re ready to respond.

What’s really going on:

They don’t feel responsible for the learning yet. Because your voice — your presence — still carries more weight than the structure.

So they wait. And wait. Not because they’re disengaged.
But because the room hasn’t invited them in — yet.

The First Shift:

Silent Start

Open your class without a word.
Let the room breathe before you direct it.
Let them step in before you step up.

This isn’t classroom management.
This is the first crack in overfunctioning.

How to Do It:

  1. Begin class with 2 to 3 minutes of quiet, independent reflection.

  2. Prompt with a simple question: "What’s one thing you need to focus on today?"

  3. Allow students to write or think without immediate discussion.

  4. Stay quiet. Trust the pause.

Use it when:

  • You’re transitioning between tasks

  • Class feels frenetic or reactive

  • You want to begin from ownership, not urgency

Reflect: Did the silence make you uncomfortable? How did the tone of the class change?

That’s part of the shift.
Because when you stop filling the space — they learn to enter it.

Why It Works:

Because it tells their nervous system:
“This is your space, too.”

Because it tells your system:
“I don’t have to drive everything for it to work.”

Because it’s not a trick.
It’s your first structural cue that ownership belongs to them — not just you.

This helps them learn Self-Regulation.

If this felt different — wait until you see the full guide.

It’s not a toolkit. It’s a new rhythm.

And it’s yours, when you’re ready.
