HERE'S YOUR BEST FIRST SHIFT!
Â
Your students aren’t stepping up — because they never had to lead.
Â
You’re still setting the rhythm, even when they’re ready to respond.
Â
Â
What’s really going on:
They don’t feel responsible for the learning yet. Because your voice — your presence — still carries more weight than the structure.
Â
So they wait. And wait. Not because they’re disengaged.
But because the room hasn’t invited them in — yet.
Â
The First Shift:
Â
Silent Start
Â
Open your class without a word.
Let the room breathe before you direct it.
Let them step in before you step up.Â
Â
This isn’t classroom management.
This is the first crack in overfunctioning.
Â
Â
How to Do It:
- Begin class with 2 to 3 minutes of quiet, independent reflection.
- Prompt with a simple question: "What’s one thing you need to focus on today?"
- Allow students to write or think without immediate discussion.
- Stay quiet. Trust the pause.
Â
Use it when:
-
You’re transitioning between tasks
-
Class feels frenetic or reactive
-
You want to begin from ownership, not urgency
Reflect:Â Did the silence make you uncomfortable? How did the tone of the class change?
That’s part of the shift.
Because when you stop filling the space — they learn to enter it.
Â
Why It Works:Â
Because it tells their nervous system:
“This is your space, too.”
Because it tells your system:
“I don’t have to drive everything for it to work.”
Because it’s not a trick.
It’s your first structural cue that ownership belongs to them — not just you.
This helps them learn Self-Regulation.
Â
If this felt different — wait until you see the full guide.
Â
It’s not a toolkit. It’s a new rhythm.
And it’s yours, when you’re ready.
